EKANE Nkwelle Ngome
Cameroon
I am EKANE Nkwelle Ngome, a passionate climate justice advocate from Nyasoso, Cameroon, with over seven years of experience at the nexus of environmental governance and human rights. My work focuses on amplifying the voices of local communities and indigenous peoples, ensuring they are active participants in decisions impacting their lands and resources. As part of Green Development Advocates (GDA), I have spearheaded initiatives to secure community forestry rights, combat deforestation from large-scale developments, and empower communities to adapt to climate change.
My passion lies in empowering marginalized groups to shape their own futures. From building community institutions and training leaders to advocating for safeguards that protect ecosystems and livelihoods, I strive to create sustainable solutions. My efforts also include helping communities navigate grievance mechanisms for large projects and fostering entrepreneurship through microcredit schemes, always with the goal of uplifting those most vulnerable to environmental and social injustices.
What drives me is the resilience of the communities I serve. Despite systemic inequalities and the growing threats of climate change, their determination to fight for justice and sustainability is a constant source of inspiration. By strengthening their capacity and amplifying their voices, I believe we can achieve a more equitable and sustainable future for all.
With the support of the JWH Initiative Grant, I am pursuing advanced training in Conservation and Management of Natural Resources at the Higher Institute of Environmental Sciences in Cameroon. This opportunity will deepen my expertise in environmental conservation and climate change while sharpening my leadership skills to tackle complex challenges effectively.
The grant also offers a platform to expand my network and collaborate with like-minded advocates from across the globe. I am eager to use this knowledge and these connections to strengthen advocacy for community rights and drive sustainable development initiatives.
I dream of a world where environmental justice prevails, and the rights of marginalized communities are fully respected and protected. I envision thriving ecosystems coexisting with empowered communities working collaboratively toward sustainable development. Ultimately, I aspire to become a global advocate influencing policies that balance development and nature, ensuring a just and sustainable future for all.
