Gerald Barekye
Uganda
Gerald Barekye is a Ugandan environmental and human rights activist dedicated to empowering communities and advancing climate justice. As the Executive Director of the Center for Environmental Research and Agricultural Innovations (CERAI), Gerald has spent six years mobilizing young people across Uganda to join climate justice movements and connect with global campaigns such as the #StopEACOP and #RePowerAfrica initiatives. By building strong social movements from local to global levels, Gerald has created powerful networks of young advocates committed to fighting climate injustice.
Through public policy research and advocacy, Gerald has inspired thousands of youth to take action, producing impactful advocacy materials that raise public awareness about the importance of conserving the environment and advocating for energy policies that protect vulnerable communities. His work places special emphasis on supporting communities affected by oil and gas projects in Uganda’s Albertine region, where climate change has intensified vulnerabilities.
With the support of the JWH Initiative Grant, Gerald is pursuing a diploma in Networking and Cyber Security to enhance his ability to navigate the challenges of shrinking civic space in Uganda. His activism has come with risks, including threats, blackmail, and arrests. The grant will help Gerald strengthen his skills in safety, security, and human rights, enabling him to continue advocating for those most affected by climate change and fossil fuel developments.
The JWH grant also connects Gerald to a global network of like-minded individuals, allowing for collaboration and knowledge exchange across borders. He is eager to use this platform to build meaningful partnerships and amplify the fight against environmental injustices worldwide.
Gerald envisions a future where leaders prioritize policies that protect vulnerable communities and promote equitable solutions to climate change. His goal is to become an influential leader advocating for policies that benefit the poor and marginalized, both in Uganda and globally.
