Nakalyowa Winnie

Uganda

Nakalyowa Winnie is a passionate legal assistant with Strategic Response on Environmental Conservation (STREC) in Uganda. She is deeply engaged in climate justice, empowering oil host communities in regions such as Hoima, Buliisa, and the Greater Masaka area. Winnie's work focuses on addressing the challenges these communities face due to oil and gas developments, including land displacement, environmental degradation, and threats to their livelihoods.

Winnie is dedicated to amplifying marginalized voices by raising awareness about their rights, advocating for fair compensation, and holding oil companies accountable. She actively supports communities by organizing peaceful demonstrations, filing petitions, writing opinion pieces, and pursuing legal action when necessary.

Motivated by the resilience and courage of the people she serves, Winnie envisions a fair and sustainable future where economic development values both people and the planet. Witnessing the devastating effects of oil exploration on education, health, and livelihoods drives her commitment to ensuring vulnerable communities are heard, protected, and supported.

With the JWH Initiative Grant, Winnie is pursuing a Master of Laws in International Energy Law and Policy (LLM) at Uganda Christian University. This program will equip her with advanced expertise in energy governance, land rights, and environmental justice. She also aims to build robust networks with global experts, fostering collaboration and advocating for stronger legal frameworks to protect affected communities.

Winnie's dream is to see a world where communities live in harmony with their environment, free from exploitation, and where natural resource extraction respects human rights and sustainability. She aspires to contribute to a just energy transition, ensuring marginalized voices are at the center of policies that prioritize equity, dignity, and environmental stewardship.
