Sam K. Kollie

Liberia

Tell us about yourself: My name is Sam K. Kollie, and I am from Liberia. I work as a Project Associate for an organization called the Sustainable Development Institute- Friends of the Earth Liberia. At SDI, we champion social justice and human rights campaigns, partnering with historically marginalized and underprivileged communities across Liberia. Our mission is to empower these communities to actively participate in decision-making processes related to natural resources. Through these efforts, we strive to guarantee that these communities receive equitable and sustainable benefits from the responsible exploitation of natural resources in their regions.

My primary role at SDI involves leveraging technology, including Geographic Information Systems (GIS), social media, and web platforms, to amplify the organization's advocacy messages focusing on justice and human rights. The aim is to engage stakeholders responsible for the sustainable management of natural resources and environmental preservation.

Growing up in a rural community with limited access to essential services like safe drinking water, health facilities, and education, I witnessed the potential for positive change if natural resources were managed effectively. Unfortunately, due to a lack of knowledge among local leaders, these resources were often mismanaged, leading to adverse consequences for the community.

Having experienced firsthand the impact of decisions made by urban elites on rural communities, I felt a deep calling to make a difference. Armed with newfound knowledge, I made the decision to return to these communities and contribute to their development. This commitment led me to join the Sustainable Development Institute as an intern merely six months after completing my secondary education, driven by the desire to enlighten minds, empower communities to harness their natural resources, and promote environmental protection.

What did you do with the JWH grant? I utilized the JWH grant to expand my knowledge and technical skills, which would enable me to become more innovative in my work as a young environmentalist. This grant played a pivotal role in covering a portion of my tuition fees for a short GIS course at the University of Twente's Faculty of Geo-information Science and Earth Observation in the Netherlands.Geo-information systems are gradually shifting away from traditional mapping or inventory towards a better understanding of the processes that shape our environment, predict future effects, and provide reliable information to support planning and policymaking. Unfortunately, due to the limited availability of these new skills and resources in Liberia, local institutions such as my organization (SDI) mostly rely on international partners for expertise. With the invaluable support of the JWH Initiative grant, I seized the opportunity to acquire essential knowledge and skills. These newfound capabilities are pivotal in bridging the gap and enhancing the execution of my work within the environmental sector, particularly in Liberia, by leveraging the power of GIS technology.

What has the JWH grant brought you? The JWH grant has played a pivotal role in nurturing my personal and professional growth. This grant has equipped me with vital GIS technology skills and knowledge, which have bolstered my expertise and enabled me to address challenges in my field more effectively. Moreover, the grant has facilitated my access to a diverse and influential network of professionals, unlocking avenues for collaboration, mentorship, and opportunities for advancement.

Looking ahead, I am confident that the JWH grant will continue to drive my development. I am eager to refine my skills, deepen my understanding, and widen my network to enhance the impact of my work. The grant is fundamental to my aspirations, enabling me to make meaningful contributions and create a positive difference in my community.

What is your dream? As the world's population continues to grow, we are facing numerous environmental challenges such as pollution, global warming, and deforestation. These challenges pose significant threats to our environment and our survival as a species. However, there are passionate environmental advocates and conservationists around the world who are making a difference. They organize large-scale movements, use technology to spread awareness and propose solutions, and work to create a safer environment for everyone. My goal is to become a technical campaigner/advocate who utilizes technology to inspire individuals to take an active role in the movement for a secure and eco-friendly world. We need the collective efforts of both ordinary citizens and decision-makers in our country to champion environmental conservation and responsible natural resource management. Together, we can work tirelessly to safeguard our planet from impending destruction.
